Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis

Seven days in a row equals one week, but did you know this designation for "one week" was set in ancient Rome and China? A week begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday, with weekdays in between. A part of "The Calendar" series, these texts discuss time-related science and social studies topics and put them into terms young children can understand. In this book, simple text paired with specifically chosen vocabulary words—such as calendar, week, and weekend—introduce important words commonly used in daily life. With full-page, full-color photographs and illustrations, this title shows activities children typically engage in throughout a week. It also indicates that any seven-day period is called a week, such as a weeklong visit to grandpa's house that starts on Wednesday and ends the following Tuesday. Of special note is the use of photos showing a great mixture of children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Clark uses concrete examples of experiences that might last a week, such as a period of rainy weather or an illness. A note to parents and teachers on the copyright page explains that early readers may need help reading some words and using the text's typical non-fiction text features, such as the table of contents, glossary, and index. Backmatter includes a short list of related books and directions to the FactHound website for more information related to the book. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis
