After returning from his first trip to Solandria, Hunter Brown finds himself alone with memories of his adventures and many unanswered questions. He returns to school with the sneaking suspicion he is being watched, but his tendency to think he is being trailed by the Shadow lands him in a heap of trouble. Soon, Hunter takes a wild ride to Solandria with two new friends, Trista and Rob, and a furry creature, Boojum. The land has greatly changed. That evening, Hunter heads for the local fair where he and two classmates embark on a terrifying ride through a portal back to Solandria. Within hours, Hunter finds himself on a new mission to protect a mysterious flame, locate seven marked Codebearers, and save the now devastated world of Solandria from an ancient evil. As Hunter helps rally the Resistance, he realizes that, whether he fails or succeeds, his path is fated by the writings of the Author. The Miller brothers begin the sequel to Hunter Brown and the Secret of the Shadow (Warner Press, 2008/VOYA October 2008) with a solid story line only to add countless obstacles and characters to the mix. It is confusing to keep up with all the new evil forces that Hunter and his allies must defeat, from the Shadow and the ancient Xin warriors to the Emissary and the Scourge. The reasons for introducing seven new marked Codebearers is also never fully realized. At the end of the book, yet another set of enemies appears, but readers might wonder how many other challenges will be brought in without full explanations. Reviewer: Laura Panter
