Felicia Bond is the illustrator of numerous books for children. In addition to the If You Give . . . series, she has also illustrated, among other titles, Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown and Little Porcupine's Christmas by Joseph Slate. She's the author and illustrator of the Poinsettia books, The Day It Rained Hearts, The Halloween Play, and Tumble Bumble. An avid animal lover, reader, and cook, she lived for many years in New York and currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

These veteran collaborators don’t stray from the tried-and-true recipe for their If You Give... series in this addition, a buoyant, circular story in which a canine’s spiraling free association leads to a day’s worth of outdoor activities. As usual, Bond’s clean, action-filled pictures, set against white backdrops, imbue the title character with abundant personality as he skips and dances his way through the pages. After his young host gives him a donut, the dog requests apple juice—and then seconds. Since there isn’t any left, he skateboards outside to pick apples to make juice. Tossing an apple to the boy “make him think of baseball,” so the two dabble in that sport, play pirates, have a water fight, and fly a kite, before the dog is again reminded of apple juice—and donuts. There’s a definite boy slant to this story, which is a nice complement to the more girl-oriented installments in the series. Even readers whose dogs are less demanding than this one are likely to recognize his boundless energy in their own pets. Ages 3–7. (Oct.)

The familiar cause and effect pattern so successful in the "If You Give..." series still packs a punch in this latest installment. When his boy gives a frisky pup a donut he needs apple juice to wash it down. Then he wants more and because there isn't any left he scampers off to pick apples with his boy in close pursuit. Along the way they play a little baseball and the pup does an exuberant happy dance after hitting a home run. There is a water fight, a pretend pirate game, a treasure hunt, and time for kite flying. The kite becomes entangled in an apple tree that makes the pup think of apple juice and if he asks for apple juice "he'll want a donut to go with it." The energetic circular story will appeal to preschoolers and emerging readers who never seem to tire of these books. Bond's illustrations are clean and crisp with little in the background to distract readers from the antics of the boy and his dog. There always seems to be room for more of these on library shelves.
