Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy

This “Blazers” book describes the annual car race that has been the most well-known event of its type ever since it began in 1911. This is a good reference book for fans of the sport because it clearly explains the most important features of the special cars in this highly popular race. The Indy is known for its attention to safety and adherence to the rules of safe driving. It is also admired for the skill and talents of its drivers, who have three chances to qualify for the big race known as the Indianapolis 500. Imagine the thrill of driving the winning car, and then actually realizing your car has won—or even of rooting for the winning car! Speed is essential, as is the work of a quick, skilled team. Everyone yells and cheers for their favorite car and driver, creating an atmosphere of great excitement. Television coverage brings the event to those who cannot attend. Enthusiastic young sports fans will appreciate the many details shared through photographs, diagrams, “Fast Facts,” and succinct text. A glossary and a list of bibliographic sources are included at the back of the book. Young sports enthusiasts will welcome this book as an excellent addition to any library. The text is well-organized with important topics highlighted by color, headlines, varied graphics, and event photographs. Indy car racing is one of racing’s super-speed car events. Polydoros has written a book which adds to the aura of excitement and suspense the event brings to racers and spectators alike. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal

Gr 3–5—Each book covers safety features and racing rules; prominent figures are only briefly mentioned, if at all. Sometimes the titles introduce science principles, such as Go-Kart, which touches on "wind resistance." The color photos are large and numerous; one special feature of each volume is the first-rate, two-page, labeled photo diagram of each vehicle. Readers will find the large font and sentence structure simple and direct. Words are highlighted in bold, colored font for easy referral to the glossary, but they are also defined at the bottom of the pages. "Fast Fact" text boxes contain trivia and safety facts. This series is exciting and approachable enough to interest reluctant readers and ESL students.
