SERIES INTRODUCTION

Some years ago I wrote a textbook—Invitation to Biblical Preaching—which has been translated into several languages and is being used rather widely to develop biblical preachers. This current series of volumes is being published as an Invitation to sermons on specific biblical books, individuals, or themes. The purpose of this series is to offer models of the principles presented in the textbook

A sermon comes alive when it is true to the biblical author’s flow of thought, clear in its unfolding, interesting to listen to, and relevantly connected to contemporary life. Hopefully that’s true of the messages in this book.

These messages were originally preached before a congregation of God’s people, and then slightly edited to their present form in order to adjust from the ‘hearing ear’ to the ‘reading eye’. But I’ve tried my best to retain their “oral flavor”—I’ve wanted them to still sound “like we talk.” This means there will be incomplete sentences, as well as colloquial and idiomatic language.

I’ve also occasionally included some “stage directions”, so that you can visualize any props or large physical movements that were part of a message.

May God speak to your heart through his Word.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

“Preaching is the rudder of the church; it provides direction, clarity, and the raw material the Holy Spirit uses to transform lives. Every honest pastor wants to become a more powerful and effective communicator and Sunukjian’s Models of Biblical Preaching series is one of the most effective tools I know. His coaching and example have had a significant role in shaping how I teach God’s Word today and I highly recommend his work to you.”

—Chip Ingram, Senior Pastor at Venture Christian Church; Teaching Pastor, Living on the Edge, an international teaching and discipleship ministry

“These model sermons remind us that exposition should be interesting, relevant, and at the same time thoroughly biblical. These messages should not just be read by pastors, but by anyone who wants their soul blessed by the transforming truth of the Scriptures.”

—Erwin W. Lutzer, Senior Pastor, The Moody Church

“We are living in a day when Bible exposition has fallen on hard times. There too few models and even fewer practitioners. Sunukjian is one of the best at wedding solid biblical exposition with creative and relevant applications. His artful use of imagination and penetrating questions in connecting the listener to the text is an invaluable guide for faithfully preaching the ever true and practical Word of God.”

—Mark L. Bailey, President and Professor of Bible Exposition, Dallas Theological Seminary

“Good preaching is both a science and an art. While it is relatively easy to master the science of exegesis, the final product is wrapped in the far more challenging art of application, illustration, and delivery. I've found that being exposed to communicators who do the art well has been both instructional and inspirational. This book is full of outstanding examples of sermons that excel in both science and art. If it is true that great preaching is not only taught, but caught, then reading through these sermons will be a significant help in upgrading the effectiveness of your preaching!”

—Joseph M. Stowell, President, Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids, MI

“Sunukjian is not only an influential teacher of preachers; he’s also an outstanding biblical expositor. In his exceptional new Models of Biblical Preaching series, Sunukjian wears both hats and helps his readers become more effective biblical communicators as he demonstrates excellent examples of contemporary expository preaching. His sermons are filled with fascinating illustrations and timely application while also reflecting powerful insights into the biblical text. These are books that will encourage any reader—pastor or layperson—and they deserve a place on any preacher’s bookshelf.”

—Michael Duduit, Executive Editor, Preaching magazine; Dean, College of Christian Studies and the Clamp Divinity School, Anderson University, Anderson, SC

“Some things can best be taught; others are better caught than taught. Good preaching requires both, which is why we should all be grateful for the unique combination found in Sunukjian’s textbook, Invitation to Biblical Preaching, and now his Models of Biblical Preaching series. The instruction and examples provided by this veteran expositor and teacher of expositors are unmatched in their usefulness to preachers everywhere.”

—Duane Litfin, President Emeritus, Wheaton College

“The best way to learn how to preach well is to copy the masters. Don Sunukjian’s Models of Biblical Preaching series puts into print a wealth of biblical expositions that are worth imitating. Fulsome, gripping introductions draw the reader into the life issue the text of Scripture—and therefore the sermon—addresses. Ideas flow logically, just as one would expect from the author of Invitation to Biblical Preaching, where Sunukjian demonstrates unparalleled mastery of that skill. The content of each sermon is well-researched but it doesn't sound overly academic. Sermons reflect the preaching portion’s contribution to the biblical book being expounded. The oral style is engaging and the illustrations not only clarify ideas; they shed the light of Scripture on us who hear them. These volumes will do preachers who read them a lot of good—so long as they learn from the preacher and resist the temptation of to copy his sermons!”

—Greg R. Scharf, Professor of Pastoral Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL

“Nearly everything I learned about sermon preparation and delivery, I learned from my former preaching professor Don Sunukjian. His new series Models of Biblical Preaching is a must-read for every preacher and teacher who desires to effectively communicate God's timeless truths.”

—Robert Jeffress, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Dallas
