Using short, easy sentences and relying on large photographs, this volume of the "Natural Wonders" series teaches young readers all about islands. The text explains that continental islands are formed by sea levels rising, water filling in low spots on land, and pieces of land getting separated. It also explains how oceanic islands, coral reef islands, and barrier islands are formed. Information discussed includes an examination of what plants and animals can be found on islands. Readers also learn about famous islands, like the Hawaiian Islands and Greenland. This very rudimentary look at islands uses large font and two to five sentences per page. The photographs, which have no captions, feel unnecessarily large, as though they are just helping use up what would otherwise be white space in the book. A table of contents, glossary, three suggested reading titles, index, and instructions about how to use the publisher's FactHound site for further research round out this slim book. Given the slight information presented (the total word count for the book is only 198 words), this series does not deliver enough to justify the high price point. A smaller paperback version, relying less heavily on large and repetitive pictures, would better present the information. The series also includes volumes about canyons, caves, glaciers, deltas, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
