Doody's Review Service

Reviewer: Maria Kristine Goertz, MD (Regions Hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center)
Description: This is a core textbook of emergency medicine that provides a well-written overview of the many chief complaints and medical conditions seem in the emergency department. While it is not as in-depth as some other books that attempt to cover the entire scope of emergency medicine, it does provide concise, pertinent information in short, focused chapters. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference that covers essentially the entire scope of emergency medicine providing up-to-date, clinically focused information. The authors' stated goal is to "produce an eminently readable book," which is certainly a worthwhile objective. The challenging objective of a reference like this is to strike a balance between thorough and concise and between comprehensive and readable.
Audience: The audience includes trainees as well as experienced emergency medicine providers. The book can be used as an educational resource and as a reference at the bedside for those involved in emergency medicine. Many of the chapters are written by one author, with some written by two to three authors from multiple different academic institutions.
Features: The book attempts to cover all areas of emergency medicine. It is divided into many different sections, primarily by anatomic regions, such as eye emergencies, cardiac emergencies, gynecological emergencies. The book comes with a code for free access to an ebook that contains additional chapters that are more obscure and perhaps not as high-yield. This allows the print book to be more manageable as a single volume. The pediatric and toxicology sections seemed to be particularly well done. The chapters are generally less than 10 pages in length and provide high-yield information as well as useful figures and tables. Each chapter covers the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, evaluation, management, and disposition and concludes with "Critical Interventions" and "Common Pitfalls," bulleted summaries of key information.
Assessment: This is an excellent review of the pertinent clinical information needed by emergency medicine practitioners. The concise chapters are easy to read and can be read fairly quickly. Among the core emergency medicine textbooks, I find this one to be the perfect balance between thorough and concise. I doubt readers would be disappointed with this book.
