Papers from a student competition and summaries of specialty seminars at the 27th Congress of the International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR), held in San Francisco, California, August 10-15, 1997.

This collection contains 12 papers and four summaries that relate to the conference theme, Water for a Changing Global Community. The papers resulted from the John F. Kennedy Student Paper Competition. The competition was established by the IAHR Council in 1992 to honor the memory of Professor John F. Kennedy, a prominent educator and researcher in the international hydraulics community. The student papers cover such topics as detection of hairpin vortices; deposition of fine suspended sediment; semi-empirical modeling of sediment transport; thermal regime of the Missouri River; and hot-film shear stress measurements in laminar and turbulent flows.

Summaries of four specialty seminars are included covering multidirectional waves, wind energy, continuing education, and hydroinformatics.
