Jonah was unhappy that God had asked him to go to Nineveh and visit his enemies and tell them that God wants to forgive them for all their bad behavior. All Jonah wants to do is get away and not take on this task. He flees on a boat, but God causes a great storm and Jonah tells the sailors to toss him overboard to save themselves from God's wrath. He is then swallowed by a whale, and is finally placed on dry land. God once again asks Jonah to go to Nineveh, and this time he does, and God forgives the people who turned to him. The lesson is further emphasized by demonstrating that God is compassionate, and Jonah and all people should be compassionate also. Kids may wonder about the whale's role, and for those who do not take the Bible literally, it can be explained as a metaphor. The text ends with a prayer and a spread defining terms such as "God," "Nineveh," and "storm." The illustrations are simple and childlike and they should appeal to the targeted age group. A good selection for Sunday school libraries and Christian homes.
