I am JP the monkey.

I am playful. I am silly.

I am fun.

But sometimes I don't feel like a fun monkey.

Sometimes I feel mad.

Like when the polka-dotted aliens invaded my spaceship.

The polka-dotted aliens came in through secret tunnels.

They attacked my spaceship and decorated it.

When JP, sometimes a monkey and sometimes a boy, is upset, he makes “funny monkey faces,” dances, and acts silly like a monkey to remind him that he is a fun monkey and should not be angry. He then embraces the thing that makes him mad—in this case, polka-dotted aliens that took over his spaceship—by having a tea party. The illustrations used are modern and colorful—there is even one page with no words, just pictures. The illustrations do a good job enhancing what JP is doing and how he imagines his environment. JP’s frustration is relatable to readers. The way he deals with his frustration works and it models a healthy way of dealing with anger. The supplemental material after the story gives a brief overview with a few tips for parents around dealing with temper tantrums. These tips and JP’s coping strategies may not always work or be appropriate, but they are healthy ways to deal with emotions and a good start in emotional health.
