When Lily calls a meeting of the kings and queens of the Western Atlantic kingdoms to discuss Tellin's problems, she is embarrassed to discover her huge mistake. The other kingdoms are also suffering, due to pollution and ocean climate change. Lily must find a way to bring all of the rulers together in order to fight the extinction of the mer-people and avoid harm coming to humans. Meanwhile, her own romance with human boyfriend, Quince, is threatened by ancient mermaid laws that insist challenges be completed before their relationship can continue. Childs continues a series that brings eco-advocacy to the forefront in a mermaid teen romance. The plot is fairly predictable but progresses quickly. Characters from earlier books grow and develop in ways that readers will appreciate and might not expect.
