Keepers of the Dawn

For two thousand years the Teeth have stood, three immense barriers of divine light rising high into the heavens, encircling the world, dividing it from Paradise. Like others of the Penitent world, Dreen and his telepathically impaired son, Bartu, cling to a dream. A dream that one day a savior will arrive to fell the imprisoning Teeth. Unlike others, however, their dream rests on more than mere faith. It rests on the promise of an artifact that came to their family centuries ago. A holy relic that is key to a future savior’s success.

To keep the relic safe, Dreen and Bartu must keep it secret. A task not easily accomplished in this world of telepaths. Making the task even more difficult is an obscure prophecy that foretells of the sacred artifact. A prophecy that Rue-A-Kai, the Destroyer, knows well. With the strength of a hundred wizards, the reincarnated savior of the Vile hordes imperils not only the Penitent kingdoms he now threatens to overrun, but also the promised arrival of a true future savior. Were the demonic Rue-A-Kai to acquire the holy relic, his perverse interpretation of prophecy would transform the relic from a device of deliverance to one of damnation, ensuring that the Teeth never fell, that the world never saw Paradise.

Yet the relic remains safely hidden, as it has for centuries. And there is no reason to believe it will not continue to remain so for centuries to come. No reason at all, that is, until the accident. . . .

About the Author

Herb J. Smith II is a computer programmer and author who enjoys writing science fantasy. He holds a degree in English Literature as well as degrees in Computer Science and Law. On September 18, 2014, Herb released Keepers of the Dawn, the first installment of his four-book, science fantasy epic, The Dawn Cycle. Keepers of the Dawn is his third published work and his first novel. Herb has adopted the catchphrase, “Author of Realms both Magical and Bright,” to describe his style of writing. “Magical” in that one is transported out of the everyday world and immersed within an alternate realm. “Bright” in that this alternate realm is presented in a bright way. That is, bright in the sense of radiant, lively, and vivid; and bright also in the sense of intelligent, reflective, and illuminating. Each book is thus a bright and magical realm unto itself. Back in the more mundane realms of reality, Herb makes his home in Jacksonville, Florida. In previous years, he resided at a number of different addresses, most located in Central Illinois. It would be easy to mistake his many moves for wanderlust, except for the fact that he never really wandered more than sixty miles from one address to the next, save for his relocation to Florida and a brief stint of a few months in Texas. Along with a diverse collection of past addresses, Herb also boasts a diverse collection of previous occupations. He has held jobs ranging from field hand and construction worker to patent attorney and law clerk. (A turbulent economy makes for a diverse background.) For the first thirty years of his life, Herb lived in and around Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln Land as that area of the country is called. Then, in 1992, he packed his belongings, jumped in his ’69 Camaro, and headed south to Jacksonville. There he entered the University of North Florida where, eighteen months later, he graduated with his second bachelor’s degree. This one in English Literature. Not long after he met his future wife, Jeri. After a whirlwind romance of a decade and a half, he and Jeri mustered their courage and eloped to Las Vegas. Herb again packed his belongings, corralled his pair of beloved cockatiels, and moved in with his new bride. Sometime later, the couple added two short-tailed cats to the household. All now live together in a state of harmonious bliss . . . or something close to it.
