Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cara Chancellor

When Ivan downloads the "Ravenwing" phone application, or "app," while driving to a concert with friends, he gets considerably more than he bargained for. The app is supposed to send him horror stories, but instead a flock of ravens appears and attacks the car. When two motorcyclists come upon the car soon after, it is empty, with the convertible top shredded by talons and the keys still in the ignition. It does not take long for one of the cyclists to find Ivan's phone, and soon the ravens have a new target. Together, the two men take shelter in an abandoned gas station, where they make a surprising discovery: a woman known as "The Specialist" who downloads a new app that conjures "The Librarian." With the help of an old, well-worn book with the word "Poe" on the cover, the Librarian defeats the birds, releases Ivan and his friends and ensures the ravens will return "nevermore." This latest title in the "Return to the Library of Doom" series contains too much text to be considered a true graphic novel, but shares that genre's dependency on colorful, stylistic pictures to flesh out characters and power the narrative. While the identity of the Librarian's ?weapon' is never explicitly discussed in the story, the reader can find this information, as well as a short exploration into Edgar Allen Poe's legacy, in a series of discussion questions and writing prompts at the end of the book.
