Written by one of the foremost experts on climate change and energy education, Mark McCaffrey, this book serves as a primer and handbook for science teachers and teacher leaders on climate and energy education. This book complements the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by providing background, specific guidance, and tools for infusing climate, energy, and environmental topics throughout the curriculum and grade-bands. It will also provide context in order to overcome the challenges of teaching and learning about climate and energy with an emphasis on scientific literacy within the context of broader environmental understanding and societal relevance. Providing a high level overview of where climate and energy topics fit (or don't fit) into the current curricula, particularly science classes, Climate Smart, Energy Wise examines the cross cutting interdisciplinary and integrating aspects of the topics, highlighting specific examples of challenges that educators, learners and parents have faced and successes they have achieved. In addition, the book showcases the resources of the Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) with examples of and links to ready to use lesson plans. Included are case studies of programs that have been successful in a variety of settings at providing students and their communities with the scientific background and societal context to become informed citizens.
