Overview

It's a vibrant autumn day in Kitten's second adventure, as the ever-curious Kitten explores the woods near her farm and meets the creatures who live there. She finds a chipmunk chewing on a seed, a caterpillar munching on a leaf, a frog catching flies and many more creatures snacking on this and that to ready themselves for winter.

While the simple rhyming couplets make this a perfect read-aloud, young readers will enjoy picking out seasonal details in the mixed-media art and searching for and finding Kitten on every page.

Are you looking for a book that will captivate young children? The text in this simple picture book is a simple poem about nature in autumn. Each line in the poem is only two words such as, "Kitten mews, Porcupine snacks" The alliteration will attract young children, but the artwork will fascinate them. At first, the mixed-media illustrations in this book (watercolor, clay, acrylic paint, and collage) appear to be simple, but upon further examination reveal amazing detail. The book can be used to teach young children simple sentences and meaning because the words and the artwork match up perfectly. It's autumn on the farm, and calico kitten is ready to explore the woodland nearby and observe its various denizens. "Hummingbird sips, / Caterpillar munches. // Rabbit nibbles, / Squirrel crunches." Kitten hides and sees a brown bear licking a honeycomb, a deer browsing on grasses, a chipmunk eating seeds and a raccoon picking corn. Skunks, turtles, frogs and beavers--everyone seems to be eating hard to prepare for the cold weather. Kitten hurries home; "Supper waits, / Fireside greets. // Door opens, / Kitten eats." The self-hardening clay, acrylic paint and mixed-media collage illustrations of Canadian author and illustrator Fernandes's second season-centered kitten adventure (Kitten's Spring, 2010) are just as intricate and eye-catching as before--though kitten's sojourn must take place in early autumn, since there is more green than popping autumn oranges and yellows. Kitten hides in nearly every tableau, and young listeners will enjoy hunting for her. Porcupine's nibbling of a shoe early on will get a giggle or two, and a marked similarity between kitten's tail and a woolly bear caterpillar will cause double takes.
