About the Author

Laura Marsh has worked in children's publishing for 20 years as an editor and currently as an author. She has written numerous books in the National Geographic Kids Readers series, including Sea Otters, Turtles, and Red Pandas. This level one book is simple enough for young children to grasp and at the same time filled with a multitude of interesting facts. The beautiful, detailed photography adds to the intrigue of this book. A physical description of a koala is followed by an explanation of its habitat, complete with a map of Australia. As koalas are both mammal and marsupial, both are defined. Photographs of other marsupials with babies in their pouch are shown and there is a photograph with diagrams pinpointing specific unique physical characteristics of the koala. The concept of koala territories is introduced. Koalas have a scent patch on their chest and rub it on trees to mark their territory. The baby stage of koalas is briefly touched upon, covering the birth of a baby koala, called Joey, time in the pouch, and life on mother’s back. A cool facts page explains that koalas are picky eaters, only eat certain types of eucalyptus tree leaves, and thus smell like the leaves. Other cool facts are given for the child to research. Koalas are considered an endangered species; and ways to help the Koalas survive are given, whether you live in Australia or America.
