The design is attractive and the clearly presented information does not bombard readers with too many details. In each volume, carefully organized chapters explore the wildlife, plant life, and/or people who inhabit the featured environments. Two chapters in each volume explore the issues of pollution and conservation. The final chapter offers a fictional story based on an aboriginal myth accompanied by fanciful artwork. Written in Spanish Life in the Mountains is one of a series of beginning reference books about various geographic areas. Using a mix of photographs and illustrations, the text offers a good basic introduction to mountain life, how mountains are formed and changed by the physical elements of rain and snow, and a description of the flora, fauna and peoples of mountain regions. A section is included on how mountains are at risk from erosion, from overgrazing, mineral extraction and pollution—garbage is even found on the summit of Mount Everest—and steps we can take to help mountain ecosystems survive. A true or false test that could be used to assess comprehension follows the main text, as does a glossary of terms. The book, which also includes a retelling of the Native American tale "How Coyote Stole Fire," would nicely supplement a bilingual education program or serve as a basic introduction to the broader study of physical and cultural geography.
