Overview

Fiji and Hawai'i are a few thousand miles apart, as are their fates as neocolonial entities. Both were once led by powerful indigenous chiefs, both were colonized, both native populations were suppressed, and both emerged under the shadow of their respective colonizers. However, Fiji's independence is political, not economic, and Hawai'i had only the option of remaining a colony or becoming part of the United States. Contributors explore why Fiji has encountered grave difficulties among the Indo-Fijian and Fijian peoples while Hawai'i has, in comparison, appeared to achieve a multinational culture. Articles include comparisons of colonial policies, expressions of the subaltern experience, and the consequences of subversion of culture and faith. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
