A Rising Knight: Vol2, Iss10
Sometimes putting the world together, means first taking it apart. It means letting go of your preconceived notions and accepting that things might not be the way you imagined them. It’s time for Vlad to get out of his own way and let world unfold before him.

"The reason I brought up the subject is because it gives you an idea of what kind of Art wielding the Reigh is."
"An imprecise one. Like all art." Vlad said crossly.
"Not at all." Ethan shook his head. "Using the Reigh is as much a science as art. Each and every spell has necessary elements and connections, if you fail to meet those requirements the spell will not function as intended. But that only holds true if you choose to construct and use a spell as prescribed. What you need to understand, is that you are not bound by any particular method or orthodoxy. For you, effect is much more important than any particular technique used to generate it."
"What?" Kat ejaculated. "That’s not what we were taught!"
"Of course not. Your belief that what you were taught is the definitive word is the reason you were told it was the definitive word. Regular schools are set up to teach regular wizards. A regular wizard is taught to use a specific spell, woven in a specific way, to cause a specific effect. That method is fine for most wizards but a Knight works differently. A Knight creates, adapts and undoes spells as often as he uses one by route. Even in weaving a relatively simple spell, a Knight may deviate wildly from the standard method.”
“So for me it’s more art than science.” An uncomfortable thought.
“No." The elder wizard smiled excitedly. "For you this science is an art. You have the ability to take the basic tools given to any wizard and use them in ways no other would dream of. Yet, even when you create something new, you are still bound by the nature of your medium. Allow me to use Kathryn’s metaphor of language. The difference between what a regular wizard does and what you do is the difference between someone who speaks a language and someone who redefines a language."
