It is almost Saint Patrick’s Day and spring is right around the corner; will it ever snow this winter? Jamie has been waiting all winter for snow, and she is becoming impatient. She and her father have waxed her snowboard, and her cousin in Colorado tells her all about the fresh “pow” there on a video chat. With the weather at seventy degrees and spring coming soon, Jamie is losing hope. She learns about the freezing temperature of water and wonders if it will ever get that cold again. Her friend Eli begins planting strawberry seedlings, but suddenly the weather changes and he is concerned about their survival. Together, they figure out a plan to keep the strawberry seedlings alive while still getting to enjoy one last spring snow. This book incorporates some mathematical concepts in the narrative, particularly with regards to temperature and the melting and freezing of water. Extension activities at the end of the book encourage readers to investigate the properties of temperature further, bringing the book to life. As a level three early reader book, young readers who are gaining independence will find confidence when reading the longer sentences and will enjoy the visual rest provided by the illustrations.
