Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Moran's flailing, retro-pop cartoon characters are the lure to this fizzy but enlightening entry in the Community Helpers series. A class taking a field trip to a construction site meets mustached Mr. Moore, who expounds upon the basics. (In a nicely realistic touch, 'He says we have to stay outside the fence.') Mr. Moore shows off the various machines and techniques that will help build this future school, taking special care to talk about safety measures (hard hats, vests, beeping trucks) and green energy. The text, delivered in a wacky font, offers easy-to-digest nuggets ('Some [trucks] work with big metal teeth'), while boxed sections explain the scene more deeply ('An excavator digs wide ditches for basements'). Zany to look at but pretty darn educational." —Booklist

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer

Mr. Moore, the construction boss, greets a multicultural group of children outside the fence at the site of their new school building. They see lots of trucks; some with big metal teeth and some with strong arms. Men and women operate the equipment, digging holes and trenches and hauling heavy loads of dirt. Part of Mr. Moore's job is keeping people safe. The workers wear hard hats and orange vests. Trucks beep when they are backing up. The building will have solar panels to provide energy. Leftover materials, such as metal, wood, cardboard, and concrete are recycled. The hole for the basement is being dug. The cement for the floor is poured. Masons are laying bricks. Plumbers and electricians are at work. The book may be confusing for young children as too much is going on for a one-day field trip. Colorful, cartoon-like illustrations show various jobs in progress. Contains a glossary, bibliography, index, and directions for building a graham cracker house. Part of the "Community Helpers" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
