The fifth Kate Delafield mystery (e.g., Flashpoints, LJ 6/1/94) by Lamda award-winning author Forrest finds the LAPD homicide detective (and her lover, Aimee), in Washington, D.C., reluctantly attending her first Vietnam veterans' reunion. The memories Kate has tried so hard to repress for 25 years come flooding back when one of the vets is gruesomely murdered and she is pressed into service by the Washington police to probe the memories of her one-time colleagues in search of the killer. Despite some pedestrian writing and clichd characters, Forrest continues to deal with important issues, here prejudice against homosexuals as well as now-forgotten Vietnam vets.

Kate Delafield, LAPD (Murder by Tradition, not reviewed), didn't even want to attend the 25th reunion of her Marine Corps unit's Vietnam stint, but since she was in Washington anyway for a training seminar, she let her lover Aimee Grant check her into the Inn at Liberty Square, where the festivities are to begin. Welcome to D.C., Kate. The night before the reunion even starts, she and Aimee are greeted by a hail of bullets that perforate their hotel door. Allan Gerlock's reception is even chillier: The wayward lieutenant who'd been assigned to direct small-time projects to help Vietnamese civilians has had his throat cut. The only clue, the letters CAP scrawled in his own blood, points straight past the assembled crowd—swaggering Woody Hampton, burned-out Doc Edward Coleman, whiny Melanie Shaw, toughened nurse Bernie Murphy, wheeler-dealer Gabe Bradford, killing- machine Dacey, and Kate's in-country lover Rachel Summer—to Lt. Charles A. Pearson, Kate's onetime fiancé, MIA since 1969. Could Cap Pearson still be alive? If he is, why would he wait so long to kill a fellow Marine? How could he crash a reunion in which everybody knows everybody else? And what does his open homosexuality have to do with Allan Gerlock's murder?

Written like a reunion journal itself—lots of can-you-top- this horror stories about the war to wade through—but Kate eventually comes up with satisfying answers to all those riddles, especially the last.
