Libya is oil-rich, increasingly restive, and young, with about a third of its population under the age of one. An ancient North African nation, Libya is a country of contrasts. From the cities along the Mediterranean coast to the nomadic peoples that still roam the Sahara Desert, Libya retains both a modern and an ancient edge. Oil rules the economy, as the topography allows for very little agriculture and political unrest has left the country in continuing turmoil. In 2011, the Libyan people successfully rebelled against the government of Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, which has been in power for forty years. However, el-Qaddafi’s death has resulted in continuing unrest not documented here due to the title’s publication date. Well-written for a younger audience, the book successfully combines pictures, charts and sidebars to tell the basics of life in modern Libya. Topics include the country’s history, regions and resources, desert wildlife, political infrastructure, and culture. Part of the “Countries Around the World” series, the book was reviewed by consultant Shiera S. el-Malik, an Assistant Professor of International Studies at DePaul University in Chicago. The book includes a fact file, a timeline, a glossary, a list of Internet resources, an index, and tools for reports and further discussion.
