Gr 9 Up—This captivating sequel to Dead Beautiful (Hyperion, 2010) has a wonderful cast of new characters as well as some old favorites. The story starts off a bit slow but as the plots thicken, it is full of suspense, mystery, and heartbreak. Renée Winters's life is in turmoil. After last spring's tragic events at Gottfried Academy, she is forced to attend the Monitors' exclusive Lycée St. Clément academy in Montreal. This means that she will be separated from her soul mate and Undead boyfriend, Dante. Although she learns a great deal about Monitor life, she struggles with depression, loneliness, and nightmares. Both Dante and Renée are searching for the key to immortality so they can finally be together. Unfortunately, the clock is ticking on Dante's "life" and takes a toll on their relationship. Then Renée discovers the secret of the Nine Sisters and begins to experience strange hallucination-type dreams. These dreams uncover clues that aid her in her search for answers, but at what cost? Just as events come to a head, readers are left on the edge of their seats and wanting more.
