National Geographic, like others who publish early readers, has made it easy for kids who want to learn more, earn prizes, play games, watch videos and take quizzes by linking to the Internet. For those who have smartphones (presumably parents of the young audience), there is even a code on the back cover to scan to activate a video. The dear parents note reminds them that kids are curious and want to know about the world around them. Reading leads to vocabulary development and triggers a thirst for learning even more. In this Level 1 reader, kids learn about the lions—how and where they live. Since this is a “National Geographic Readers” series publication, the quality of the colorful pictures is outstanding. The text is 100% accurate when it treats lions on the savannah close up after a kill. The females hunt, the male(s) eat first, then the females, and whatever is leftover goes to the cubs who may have to fight to get their share of the kill. Lions are part of a group called big cats, but they are different. They enjoy living together in a group called a pride rather than solitary. Furthermore, the male has a mane and lions will go into water after prey unlike other cats. The book closes with a quiz to see what readers have retained from the text, plus a picture dictionary.
