About the Author

Stephen Sakellarios holds a masters degree in counseling. He produced the independent documentary, "In Another Life: Reincarnation in America," which was broadcast on a PBS affiliate in Denver in 2003. He is the author of "Matthew Franklin Whittier in his own words."

Abby Sakellarios, formerly Abby Poyen Whittier, was born in East Haverhill, Mass. on June 2, 1816 and died of consumption on March 27, 1841. Very little is known about her in the historical record except that she was "attractive" and loved her best friend in Portland, Maine very much. The one historical letter in her hand, to Matthew Whittier's sister, Elisabeth, reveals her to be bright, saucy and responsible. Her mother, Sally Poyen, is said to have been "brilliant." Her father was a French immigrant from Guadeloupe. Her cousin, Charles Poyen, introduced "mesmerism" (hypnosis) to America in 1836. Psychic readings and past-life memory suggest she was highly intelligent and ahead of her time, interested in metaphysics and music, and very socially conscious.
