That does not mean that it has been easy for women to get the recognition or support they deserve until very recently. Beginning with Clara Wieck Schumann, who was a very popular composer and pianist in the 19th century, Ball gives brief biographies of ten amazing women who followed their dreams and worked hard to become some of the most accomplished female musicians of their times. Straightforward and easy to read, the text is broken up by images of the women throughout their lives, as well as brief asides presenting interesting facts about each woman. Gr 4-7-This eclectic collection profiles 10 "gutsy women," from Clara Schumann to Vanessa-Mae. Ethel Smyth, Marian Anderson, Ella Fitzgerald, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Chantal Kreviazuk, and Measha Brueggergosman are also included. The chapters combine biographical facts, accomplishments, and anecdotes. While readers may not be familiar with all of these individuals, or, indeed, consider them all to be "magnificent," the book does provide an interesting and varied look at the field.
