Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung

Elliot and his father visit the pumpkin patch to select a pumpkin to carve into a jack-o'-lantern. In this story, children learn about the process of preparing the pumpkin. Tips on selecting a pumpkin and carving a jack-o'-lantern are shared as part of the story. Elliot and his father wash the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds before carving the design. The color photographs illustrate the procedures that the father and son follow for making their jack-o'-lantern. The text of the main story is featured on the page in green blocks. There are circular insets with additional information such as the size of the largest pumpkin or how to store pumpkins. After the story, there are four pictures for the children to sequence the steps in making a jack-o'-lantern; the answer key is at the bottom of the page. The arrangement of letter order (A, B, D, and C) for each picture across the layout from left to right is unusual. Readers will find a glossary, however the words in the glossary are not highlighted or in bold print in the main body of the text. For children who want to seek more information about pumpkins, there is a list of additional books along with the FactHound web site which has portals to Internet sites. This book is a part of the "Step by Step" series of stories that sequences procedures for different activities. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
