Overview

In discussions of sexual assault it is rarely acknowledged that men are often victims of sexual abuse. Male victims feel that the violence and humiliation suffered during a sexual attack threatens their personal and physical integrity, as do female victims, yet there are also differences in the male experience of sexual assault and the response to it. However, there has been little formal debate on the prevalence, characteristics, and consequences of male sexual assault. This important book opens the debate with reports from international experts in the field, including chapters on: homophobia and the cultural and historical background and attitudes to male sexual assault; sexual assault of male children and adolescents and of men in institutional settings; the trauma suffered by survivors of male rape and by men as co-survivors of female rape; and the treatment and legal recourse available to victims. The book brings together existing data, theoretical perspectives, and implications for future practice and policy.

Description: This book represents an update to the first edition, which was published in 1992. In this edition the editors report on the significant developments in the understanding of the prevalence and characteristics of the sexual assault of men, including a report on the first epidemiological study of male sexual victimization in Europe.
Purpose: The editors attempt to broaden our thinking about sexual assault and to regard it as an experience that may happen to people of either gender. They stress the need for society to begin to work toward providing services to all victims of sexual assault.
Audience: The book is directed toward healthcare professionals and those who come in contact with victims of sexual assault, including psychiatrists and therapists.
Features: In this second edition contributors reports on the first epidemiological study of male sexual assault in Europe, providing new insight into the prevalence of male sexual victimization. In addition, they cover pertinent topics such as male rape in prisons, the historical and anthropological background to the subject, legal issues relating to male sexual assault, and the link between early sexual victimization and later perpetration.
Assessment: This is a very informative book in helping understand the prevalence and characteristics of male sexual victimization. A subject that has long been neglected is covered, and the editors reinforce the need for society to address this issue in terms of prevention, care, and treatment. A second edition is justified in that significant developments, including an epidemiological study in Europe, have added to a further understanding of the prevalence and characteristics associated with male sexual victimization.
