Man the Symbolizer
Author say that the scope in this work is philosophical. Although I am a theologian, and the occasion of this work was a theological problem. I have worked seriously in philosophy for over forty years. I shall not enter here into my conception of the relationship between the two fields of knowledge. I do point out at times further questions which would require a consideration of properly theological data, and which call for a properly theological treatment. I do so because I start with reflection on actual human experience and many man and women witness to actual experience which involves relationship with God. An account of the properly human moving on to such a further consideration. A theory of man must be capable of accounting for further experiences which are also experiences of men and women who do not cease to be human when they encounter God. I do not attempt to elaborate a full philosophy or basic knowledge of human being, I should say that what I have done in this book raises a number of further questions, and the dynamics of the thought would propel me or another thinker to work out the answers to those questions in a more through going way. I regard this work as a contribution to philosophy. Since I am convinced that symbolizing and symbols can be understood only in the setting which I have indicated.
