Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Lehmann

Your class is going on a field trip! The students have all brought lunches and permission slips, the teacher has the schedule and the tickets, and the bus is ready to head to the museum. But the trip will be much more fun if everyone uses their manners. Introductory pages explain what manners are and explain the focus of the book. Each following page displays in comic form a particular situation in which manners are necessary and offers an example of good manners and of bad manners. In a brief twenty-one pages, a wide variety of ways to use good manners are shown, from helping with the loading of the bus to only touching what is meant to be touched at the museum. The description of manners as a general way of treating others and things around us comes through clearly and encourages readers to be thoughtful in all they do. The illustrations are amusing, but it is difficult to tell from the pictures alone which behaviors are positive and which are negative. Some consistency of characters would have made that clearer in the illustrations, and would have made a somewhat more engaging story, instead of a series of vignettes. There is a table of contents, glossary and index. Suggestions for further reading and the Facthound website provide children with ways to find out more. Reviewer: Jennifer Lehmann
