Overview

MANUAL OF NURSING DIAGNOSIS, Ninth Edition, contains the evolving diagnostic language of professional nursing and includes all of the new and revised diagnoses from the fourteenth North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) conference.

The Manual presents the nursing diagnosis taxonomy under the framework of Functional Health Patterns, created by Marjory Gordon. It provides a quick, pocket reference for students and practitioners to access nursing diagnoses and covers definitions, defining characteristics, and (when applicable) etiological or related factors for every NANDA-approved nursing diagnoses, as well as additional diagnoses developed by the author. It is organized into five parts: (I) Functional Health Patterns Typology, (II) Functional Health Patterns Assessment Guidelines, (III) Use of Diagnostic Categories in Clinical Practice, (IV) Documentation: Format and Example, and (V) Diagnostic Categories.

Description: This updated pocket manual of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA)-approved nursing diagnoses includes quick reference to functional assessment and documentation.
Purpose: This is a quick reference to 22 new diagnoses approved by NANDA. The evolving diagnostic language of the nursing profession is included, incorporating new research on diagnostic categories and thus facilitating critical thinking and providing "cues" to diagnoses.
Audience: This manual is intended for nurses, faculty, and nursing students. Assessment guides are included for individuals, families, and communities. Diagnoses specific to infant, child, adult, and critical care nursing are included.
Features: Updated nursing diagnoses, a review of the nursing process, and use of nursing diagnoses in clinical practice are all included. Bold-faced type indicates those diagnoses that are currently approved by NANDA. Additional diagnoses are included that the author has found useful in clinical practice. Although this book contains references to family and community assessments, these sections are weak. In the community section there is an out-of-date (1984) reference to guide community health assessment. The section on family assessment appears to be an individual assessment made to fit a family. I believe these sections of the book are of little practical use. In my experience, family and community health nurses do not routinely use nursing diagnoses.
Assessment: For nurses and institutions that use nursing diagnoses, this is an important reference. There are 22 additional diagnostic categories. I believe the best use will be the inpatient hospital setting.
