The title is something of a misnomer: actually the good doctor takes us from infancy through childhood to adolescence. Weinberg dispenses advice on children's ailments and stages of growth, along with the pitfalls to expect. In general the advice seems quite sensible. For example, his prescription for living with an adolescent ("love; cooperation; tolerance from both parents and teen") is right on and a tough order. Advice on how to talk about sex, alcohol, and tobacco is given calmly. Since "wisdom" in parents takes decades to perfect, it makes sense to keep the solid, commonsensible Weinberg nearby. Unfortunately, a disappointing typo in the table of contents ("hierdra" for "hiedra") causes some concern. Nevertheless, this valuable book is recommended for public libraries.--John P.
