About the Author

Sophie J. Bakri, M.D., is a specialist in the Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and is a professor of ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Bakri is a specialist in diseases of the retina and vitreous, in particular, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and complex retinal detachments, as well as the surgical treatment of these conditions. She has authored many peer-reviewed papers and book chapters; furthermore, she is a principal investigator on numerous clinical trials on drugs for retinal disease. Dr. Bakri has received an Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists, and she is listed as one of Becker's 135 leading ophthalmologists in the United States.
