Description: This book is the third in a series of study guides developed by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) and designed to provide in a focused and abbreviated format the key components of the medical assessment of physically and sexually abused children.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide an outline of critical information on child maltreatment, by an expert, that would be understandable, even to a nonmedical person. Although there are more comprehensive medical books on child maltreatment, some of which contain expansive collections of pictures, this guide is valuable because of its brevity, simplicity, and easy readability.
Audience: The book has been developed for a large readership with variable experience in the area of child maltreatment. An expert in the area may find some new information, but it is students, house officers, or nonmedical personnel who will benefit from the expertise of the book's author.
Features: The strength of the book is in the well-selected, large number of references. There are study questions at the end of each major section, and these help the reader focus on what should have been learned in the reading. The table of contents is well organized, and there is no index. The appendixes are helpful in their inclusion of basic drawings highlighting anogenital anatomy in boys and girls, a glossary of medical terms, and a section on terms used in sexual abuse assessments. There is also a knowledge test that helps the reader determine how much has been learned. This test can be used to obtain Continuing Education credits.
Assessment: Overall, this book is a useful guide, particularly for medical students, residents, and nonmedical personnel to get an overview and introduction to the area of child maltreatment. There are excellent annotated references to guide the reader to more comprehensive texts in each of the areas presented.
