This story is part of the "Recon Academy" brand that chronicles the adventures of four youngsters with special abilities in the fields of forensics, martial arts, computers, and gadgets. Together they battle evil and help adults maintain law and order. In this episode, a villain named Shadow Cell steals a device that can scramble communications. The four heroes, Jay, Hazmat, Ryker, and Emmi, have to find way to defeat Shadow Cell and return the device to its home in a spy museum. The plot is interesting, and the author uses illustrations as well as words to convey the story, which is a nice touch and something that graphic novels should employ more often. The beginning of the book contains a forward which sets the stage and provides some back story, while the end of the book contains short descriptions of two of the characters, a case file, an explanation of espionage, a note about the author and illustrators, a glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts, and a website. There are some typographical errors and awkward phrasings. The main problem, however, is that there is minimal character development. Readers unfamiliar with the "Recon Academy" may wonder who these four heroes are, and why they should care about them. On the other hand, those who are familiar with the brand will have no trouble following the story, and they will undoubtedly enjoy it. Reviewer: Leona Illig
