About the Author

Meredith Costain is the author of Daddies Are Awesome and many other books for children. Her first poem was published when she was eight, and she has been writing ever since. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her partner and their pets.

Polona Lovšin is the illustrator of Daddies Are Awesome. She grew up on her grandparents' farm in Slovenia, where her dad gave her colored pencils and paints as a child. She went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, before beginning her career as an illustrator.

Meredith Costain is the author of many books for children. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her partner, Paul Collins, and their many pets. When she's not writing, Meredith loves to sleep, read, eat chocolate, and play blues piano.
Polona Lovšin grew up on her grandparents' farm in Slovenia. Her dad gave her colored pencils and paints as a child, and she went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, before beginning her career as an illustrator.

It’s all about moms—feline ones—in this playful companion to the dog-centric Daddies Are Awesome. Lovsin’s handsome illustrations capture the distinctive mannerisms of more than a dozen cat families. “Mommies are clever./ They know when you’re sad./ They’ll hug you and kiss you/ when you’re feeling bad,” writes Costain in a pair of scenes; in one, a Maine coon cat envelops its child, and a calico mother licks her kitten in the other. Animal-loving children will revel in the careful detail Lovsin brings to her feline portraits, while mothers will appreciate the underlying moms-can-do-it-all message. Ages 4–8. (Apr.)

The team of Costain and Lovšin (Daddies are Awesome, 2016) gives moms their due.Rhyming verses tell of all the ways moms are amazing: "Mommies are magic. / They kiss away troubles… // …find gold in the sunlight / and rainbows in bubbles." Moms are joyful—the best playmates. They are also fearless and will protect and soothe if you are scared. Clever moms know just what to do when you're sad, sporty moms run and leap and climb, while tender moms cuddle. "My mommy's so special. / I tell her each day… // … just how much I love her / in every way!" Whereas dads were illustrated with playful pups and grown-up dogs in the previous book, moms are shown as cats with their kittens in myriad colors, sizes, and breeds. Lovšin's cats look as though they are smiling at each other in their fun, though several spreads are distractingly cut in half by the gutter.
