In this title from the “Mr. Putter & Tabby” series, the titular Mr. Putter, along with his cat, Tabby, plans a birthday celebration for his neighbor and paramour, Mrs. Teaberry. Rylant creates a unique set of characters for her children’s series: two senior citizens and their pets. Unlike the stereotypical depiction of older people, Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry are written without caricature. Importantly, Rylant infuses humanity into these characters without sacrificing the humor and play that is so appealing to young readers. The story, simple in its plot, showcases the characters and their relationship. Understated in many ways, the book shows the affection between Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry, as well as between them and their pets, Tabby and Zeke.
