PreS-Gr 3 Rayner continues the adventures of the Pig family (Mr. and Mrs. Pig's Evening Out 1976, Garth Pig and the Ice - Cream Lady 1977, and Mrs. Pig's Bulk Buy 1981, all Atheneum) in this collection of seven illustrated short stories, four of which have appeared in Cricket magazine. The fun of these books is in the ten child-like pig siblings who live in a world of human accouterments, a world that is populated only by pigs and the occasional Wolf. These stories involve the pigs using reverse psychology on a contrary Benjamin Pig, Mr. and Mrs. Pig's attempt to sleep after all ten children squeeze into their bed, and a sports day full of events that pit the boys against the girls. The best are a story in which Garth Pig's siblings save him from Mrs. Wolf, who has crashed their parents' party, and a hilarious one in which Benjamin and Alun try to help with the gardening. Rayner's expressive watercolors on an open white background are appealing and reveal the character of the porcine protagonists. This collection will be as welcome for independent reading as it is for reading aloud. David Gale, ``School Library Journal''
