In 1928, to the despair of his father, Merlin Richards abandons the family architectural practice in Wales and goes off to America in search of Frank Lloyd Wright. The great man proves elusive and Merlin suffers all sorts of setbacks before he tracks him down in the Arizona desert where Wright is fitfully involved in the construction of the Biltmore Hotel.
When he meets the beautiful young designer, Rosa Lustig, Merlin believes that his run of bad luck has at last ended but he’s soon disillusioned. Rosa is murdered and Merlin becomes a prime suspect. He is surrounded by jealous rivals for Rosa’s favours and by those who want to keep him away from Frank Lloyd Wright. The police apply immense pressure on him. Merlin believes that the only way to prove his innocence is to catch the real killer himself and that makes him a target for the man.
Dogged by enemies and constantly under attack, Merlin presses on, driven by the conviction that, in return for her friendship, he owes it to Rosa to bring the villain to justice. In doing so, he learns that architecture can be a lethal profession.
