About the Author

Rebecca Ruter Springer (1832-1904) wrote My Dream of Heaven, originally entitled, IntraMuros, as a result of an inspiration she had when she was ill. The subtitle is presented as a dream, and the story itself is presented as a vision. She herself said that the story was not meant to be taken with the weight of the prophetic, but as a comfort and an idea of heaven in a general way. She took the dream and turned it into a story that has comforted many in their grief since 1898 when it was first published. Springer was a Methodist writer who also wrote other works: Beachwood, Self, Songs by the Seas, Leon, and others. During Rebecca Springer's nineteenth-century lifetime, many Christians were pierced by doubt about the afterlife. Many of them succumbed to going to spiritualist séances in an effort to find proof that their loved ones still lived. In response to this need, many Christians of Rebecca Springer's time wrote stories and descriptions of heaven using what clues they could pick up from the Bible to give a reason for the hope they had. Some of these took the market by storm after the Civil War as bestsellers. Coming at the end of this post-Civil War rage, Springer's book sold well and continued to sell steadily through the twentieth-century. It has stood the test of time and has become a classic. Vicki Jamison Peterson has ministered worldwide since 1972 through evangelistic meetings, television and radio. Her meetings are characteristic by the unique move of God's Spirit in miracles, signs and wonders. During a time of sorrow at a close friend's departure to heaven, Vicki found Rebecca Ruter Springer's book to be a great comfort. It blessed her in such a way that she has brought this version including the two missing chapters back into publication. Vicki has written the foreword and afterword explaining some fascinating aspects of this classic work.
