Excerpt

“Let me see if I understand you.” Vlad said dryly, “You want to send a thirteen-year-old boy to fight demons and harvest their dead bodies so that you can sell them in some kind of black market. This is your idea of help.”

“I'd be surprised if you can find a demon above level two2 in this city. Demons are only truly dangerous in large numbers. Anything above a four and the streets would run in blood. And yes, sending you out there to fight is my idea of help. The second you became a Knight you lost the right excuses.” His expression was hard but clear. Atonement or not he was sure this was the right thing to do. "A Knight learns fastest through battle, you have years of education to make up. Wizards have a refined form of instinct, blood memory. In a knight that instinct is much more pronounced. It will guide your hand. I have every faith that you can do this.” Or at least he was trying to act like he did.

Vlad thought long about what he should do. There was no denying he’d felt something guiding him the night he beat the demon. That same something had reacted to Merlin's name in Ethan's presence. Right now it was telling him he could do this. He didn’t know if it was instinct or blood memory or even his own fractured mind. All he knew was that in the last seven day’s held felt more alive then he’d ever been in his entire life. He wanted to keep going.

“How do I find a demon?” He said at last.
