Given the preponderance of books involving large mammals, National Geographic’s new, must-have guide on birds is delightful. From common birds, such as the American Robin, to more exotic birds, like the keel-billed toucan, plus fan favorites such as the ostrich and penguin, there are great opportunities to share excitement over learning about birds. What makes this title stand out are sections, such as “parent tips” which provides details on how to help a child make a bird poster or go birding, and questions for kids, such as: “which bird-of-paradise is your favorite?” Each bird has facts listed such as home and food. Large, bright photos make this an appropriate book for younger readers, and older elementary students will find plenty of useful facts for book reports or personal interest. Chapters cover “Bird Basics;” “Flyers, Runners and Swimmers;” “Singers, Dancers and Show-Offs;” “Builders, Weavers and Nesters;” and “Hunters, Gatherers and Scavengers.” Additional sections include a bird map and matching game.
