About the Author

BARBARA KRAMER began writing biographies for children and young adults after following the advice of another author who said, "Write what you like to read." She remembered how much she enjoyed biographies when she was a kid, especially stories about trailblazers such as Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and Elizabeth Blackwell. She decided that's what she wanted to write. Her subjects have included both historical figures and people in the news. She and her husband live in Iowa with their two cats. They also have two grown children.

Children today think nothing of picking up a phone to talk, text someone or take a photo. However, in the late 1800s, phones did not exist until Alexander Graham Bell invented one that worked. In 1876 Bell hollered a simple phrase into the contraption he had created. This “call” to his assistant Mr. Watson was heard even though Watson and Bell were in separate rooms. The phone had sent voices through wires. Bell was a great inventor who had a curious mind even as a child. This well-organized biography spans Bell’s life from birth in 1847 to death in 1922, and tells readers of Bell’s interests ranging from music to flight to science. This 32-page book contains several two-page chapters enhanced with labeled old photos and illustrations. Fact boxes contain information such as how Bell made his first invention when he was only 11 years old. Vocabulary words are scattered throughout the text. End material is rich with a quiz about Bell and a glossary filled with both pictures and words to make definitions clear. This well researched book is from the “National Geographic Kids” series and is considered a level 2 reader in which students are reading independently. The book will complement history and science lessons and will help readers understand the complexity of the development of something that they use almost daily.
