Billed as the ultimate modern warrior, the U.S. Navy SEALs are adept at fighting on the Sea, Air, and Land, as befits their unique acronym. Best known for their ability to survive and fight in the water, the SEALs are among the most intensely trained of the U.S. military's elite forces. Young adult readers interested in the world of these skilled sailors will find the history, training and current missions that engage these fighters absorbing. Part of the ten-title "Special Forces: Protecting, Building, Teaching and Fighting," series, this book is unfortunately less consistent in its coverage than others in the series. While the U.S. Military provided information, text and images, and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel John T. Carney served as a special consultant, the writing of this book is not up to the standards of the others. The historical review of the Navy SEALs is inconsistent. While much is well done, the portion covering the Panama and Grenada campaigns is weak. In Grenada, readers never learn why it was important to rescue Paul Scoon; the section about Panama does not detail why an invasion of Panama and the ouster of Manuel Noriega was necessary. The author frequently slips from second to third person, particularly in the sections discussing training and survival tactics. However, like the other series titles, this book does include a table of contents, index, bibliography, Internet links and suggested titles for further reading. It also includes an instant glossary, highlighting unknown words in the text and giving a clear definition in a special box at page bottom. While the content is mostly strong, the writing of this book leaves much to be desired. It is a title worth checking out, but with caution and only if others are unavailable. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
