Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Courtney Huse Wika

Neferet's Curse chronicles the unraveling of Emily Wheiler's charmed life in 1893 Chicago. Forced into the role of Lady of Wheiler House after her mother dies in childbirth, Emily tries hard to live up to the expectations and conventions of a woman of her stature. It is the expectations of her father, rather than society, however, which leave her anxious and terrified. While at first he only demands that she fulfill her mother's entertaining and social roles, soon he is choosing her clothing and denying her visitors. Then he begins to visit her room late at night, reeking of alcohol and cigars. As a woman left without recourse, Emily plots to escape her father through marriage. Before she can, however, her father's abuse escalates, and then even the man who supposedly loves her will have nothing to do with her. Luckily for Emily, the House of Night marks her as one of their own and promises solace, safety, and vengeance. A short but engrossing House of Night novella, this book sheds revealing light on the motives and motivations of the dark priestess Neferet. Once a youthful, vibrant young woman, her life is forever altered at the hands of her father. A story of grief, rape, and trauma, the author does well extending the conversation of sexual abuse in the afterword. Series mythology is not incorporated until the end; thus, while an essential installment for series fans, it could appeal to a wide-range of readers as a stand-alone book.
