Neptune King and the Psychic Witness
Neptune King and the Psychic Witness is the 12th book in the Neptune King series. Shark has returned from his honeymoon and is ready to get back to work again. They’re relaxing in Neptune’s office when a new client walks in off the street. Keely Simmonds enters their office and announces dramatically that she witnessed a murder. The boys are a little surprised that she didn’t go to the police with this information, until she tells them she saw the murder in a vision. Turns out Miss Simmonds is a psychic. In her vision she witnessed a woman being strangled and thrown off a train. She saw the body roll down an embankment and into a pond surrounded by reeds. Neptune and Shark are a little reluctant to take her case as it would be a monumental undertaking to search every pond or lake near a train line in England. She helps to narrow down the search by meditating over railway maps and eventually pinpoints a location.
The next day they head out to Wilton with Miss Simmonds and Fang, Shark’s dog and begin a search. It is Fang that makes the discovery, but instead of finding a fresh body, they find a skeleton. The body has been lying there for at least ten years. The investigation continues as they try to discover her identity and bring the murderer to justice. When they do identity the skeleton, the case takes on a new slant when they learn that she was carrying jewellery worth over five hundred thousand pounds. It at least gives them motive for the murder. Meantime, Shark is enjoying married life except for his wife’s cooking, while Neptune is distracted and at the end of his tether trying to cope with Rachel’s volatile pregnancy induced mood swings. When the trail leads them to France, Neptune is reluctant to follow it up as it’s his second anniversary and he doesn’t want to miss it given Rachel’s uncertain temperament, so Shark enlists Becky’s aid to come with him as she speaks fluent French. While Shark follows the trail on one of their suspects, Neptune continues the investigation at home, looking into the second suspect.
It all comes to a head when someone tries to kill the psychic. Neptune moves her to his house worrying the whole while how Rachel will behave because it turns out Miss Simmonds rather fancies him, and the last thing he needs is more friction at home. However, with Shark’s information from France, and the results of his own investigations, they set a trap for the murderer and close in on him.
