It is not meant as an exhaustive review, but rather as a quick reference for commonly seen conditions. The authors indicate that this fifth edition contains less material than prior editions in order to focus on the most important conditions and their imaging.
Purpose: The book is designed to provide fundamental information to individuals interpreting imaging studies of the head and neck, brain, and spine. It focuses on a concise, bulleted review of information relevant to the entities discussed. The authors aim to provide a high level overview, with the understanding that other resources should be sought for more in-depth information.
Audience: The primary audience is radiology residents and fellows, for whom it is well suited. In addition, the book is appropriate for all radiologists who practice general and emergency radiology. The authors are well qualified to author the work.
Features: True to the authors' intent, the book provides key, brief discussions about relevant entities encountered in common practice. The presentation is in bulleted format and is accompanied by representative images. The captions are appropriate and labeling of the images is adequate. The image quality itself is excellent. While brief, the sections on imaging of the brachial plexus and spinal trauma are among the best in the book.
Assessment: This book provides an excellent, abbreviated overview of critical disorders of the brain, spine, and head and neck. It is an excellent overview of the material and is very useful as a review resource for exam takers.
