This is story number seven in Katherine Applegate's series of "Roscoe Riley Rules." Roscoe introduces himself to the reader from his time-out chair. He gives an honest retelling of how he came to be in his latest predicament. If Roscoe guesses the weight of a giant pumpkin, he will win books for his school library—and a lot of candy for himself. But when a little black cat keeps trying to cross his path, Roscoe's superstitious nature gets him into plenty of trouble. This book might remind the reader of Junie B. Jones, but the author does a wonderful job of giving Roscoe his own unique voice or "kidspeak" and humorous adventures. Kids can connect to Roscoe, his mishaps, and his innocent way of looking at the world. Applegate's story is action packed and would motivate even the most reluctant of readers.
