About the Author

Puck is the author of dozens of children’s books, including New York Baby and My Foodie ABC. He is also the creative chief behind duopress labs, the company responsible for books such as Messi: Superstar, 100 Pablo Picassos, Park, and many more.

Violet Lemay is an award-winning author and illustrator whose children’s books include 100 Pablo Picassos, My Foodie ABC, and the Local Baby series, which includes New York Baby, Chicago Baby, andBeach Babies. Violet worked as a professor of illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Violet’s illustrations have been published by Penguin, Holt, HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Scholastic, and Highlights. Violet currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

A toddler with purple hair that matches her mother’s gazes at a pyramid sculpture, which she later replicates with blocks in her high-rise apartment: “We say ‘MoMA’ when we really mean ‘Mama’... and we love to make art.” Lemay’s loose, brightly hued artwork shows babies learning their shapes (by way of pizza slices and bagels) and “big words” like “Fuhgettaboutit!” Babies from the boroughs will be the primary audience for this tongue-in-cheek homage to the Big Apple. These babies are too posh for their own good. In this smug review of daily life in the Big Apple, including its tourist attractions, the developmental mark is missed entirely. A little girl holds her mother's hand as they stroll through the art museum: "We say MoMA when we really mean Mama." Less obscurely, a four-panel spread depicts a babe in stroller through changing seasons; the snow piles high and a scarf covers the child's face during the blustery winter. The food-cart experience is represented by a bagel, pizza and pretzel, glossed with a gush: "And we have fun learning our shapes!" In a nod to the city's diversity, youngsters greet each other in a host of languages. Busy pops of bold colors emphasize the hustle and bustle. A darkened cityscape seems to promise rest, but one cry ("Waaaa!") lights up the sky. "New York is the city that never sleeps, but New York babies do…sometimes." Two concluding pages of suggested parent-child activities overwhelm in their attempt to educate. Pretentious. (Board book. 2-3)
